What Do We Test?

Our comprehensive test zeros in on 65+ essential biomarkers to assess your health holistically.

Thyroid

The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of the neck, below the Adam's apple. It works by signaling the release of hormones when the body needs them. A malfunctioning thyroid either signals too much or not enough and cannot regulate the balance. When either of these processes occur, it is called hypo- or hyperthyroidism (under or overactive).

Hormone

Hormones are messenger molecules that work together to make up the body's intricate web of communication. They impact areas of health including metabolism, mood regulaiton and mental health, fertility, and more. When they're in balance, things hum along smoothly, but if they're out of whack—think too much or too little—it can throw off your entire system.

My first appointment with my practitioner went really well. It's a nice change when someone actually listens to you and doesn't make you feel like it's all in your head. I'm excited to see where this journey with Malla takes me.

  • When can I expect my lab results?
  • Once your blood draw is completed, you should expect to receive your results in 7 - 10 business days!
  • What is functional medicine?
  • Functional medicine is a personalized, whole-body, root cause approach to health. Instead of simply putting a band-aid over what’s currently bothering you, as is often the approach in conventional medicine, functional practitioners instead ask *why* you might be experiencing those symptoms in the first place.

Functional medicine practitioners look at your life starting from the moment you were born and dig deeper with specialty lab testing to truly optimize your health.

While it has elements of naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicine, functional medicine is really about blending our knowledge of holistic, natural medicine with modern science and advanced lab testing to restore balance to your biology.
  • What is a functional practitioner at Malla?
  • Malla’s functional practitioners are registered dietitians and licensed nutritionists trained in functional medicine and functional lab testing, as well as in behavior change science. While they have extensive knowledge in nutrition science, they look at your health holistically, and support you through the 6 pillars of health: mindfulness, movement, nutrition, sleep, environment, and relationships.
  • Do you offer other functional lab testing?
  • We do! We offer a wide range of lab tests through the Malla platform, including advanced gut and hormone tests (like GI-MAP and DUTCH), thyroid and environmental health panels, and so much more.

You will work with your dedicated practitioner to decide what testing, if any, is right for you, and we will order it on your behalf and spend the time to review the results with you over a video session.
  • What do you mean by "Optimal Ranges"?
  • Conventional medicine practitioners often look at your biomarkers and assess whether or not they fall into the standard the reference ranges set by traditional labs. If they don't, and are out of range, it may be a sign of an underlying health issue. Ensuring you're not in a state of disease is important, but, as functional practitioners, we want to ensure your health is beyond "normal" (the definition of which is determined by the state of what's "normal" in the U.S.) and that you achieve an optimal state of health. In practice, that means optimal ranges are narrower than the broader reference ranges set by conventional labs.
  • When should I take the Foundational Health Test?
  • We recommend getting your blood drawn before 10am, and, if applicable, on days 19-21 of your menstrual cycle. Contact your practitioner for personalized recommendations, as length of cycle varies for many.
